Goodbye PIPEDA, Hello PPCDA: What’s Next for Canadian Privacy

Canada’s proposed Protecting Privacy and Consumer Data Act (PPCDA) would retire core parts of PIPEDA and replace them with a modern federal privacy regime built for AI and the data-driven economy. It recognizes privacy as a fundamental right, elevates children’s data, tightens meaningful consent, and introduces a powerful new regulator with binding orders and significant penalties. It also clarifies rules for de-identification, cross-border transfers, and automated decisions.
